Legal thinking in the hermeneutic paradigm.

The philosophical and theological principles of the inscription of God’s name are being discussed in this article. The comprehension of the essence of the phenomenon is based on studying of Russian philosophy of the name of the Silver Age, the ideas of which are illustrated with those works of Christian Fine Art where the inscription of God’s name or sacred words play one of the key roles filling cultural artefact with sacred sense. Name and word within the framework of icon (...) representation are understood ontologically because with the help of them specific spiritual, abstract ‘mechanism‘ of icon carries out its work. In other words this ‘mechanism‘ means dialectical co-presence of Pre-image and image or visible and invisible. The inscription of God’s name and word shows one of the essential, doctrinal concepts of Christian tradition - God’s appearance to the world. Besides, specific ‘history of a letter‘ in icon is being worked out in the article on the basis of theological and philosophical comprehension of the phenomenon of the name and word. It presents itself a special methodology of a view on the tradition of Christian Art with the purpose of ‘jumping‘ at the extent of verbal filling of visual representation. Works of Christian Art from the first centuries of its existence to the masterpieces of Russian icon-painting of the 17th century are visual material when studying ‘the history of painting‘. In an article “Countering a Counter-intuitive Probability” [4], Lynn E. Rose discusses a question in conditional probability, claiming that the following problem posed by Copi [1] is usually incorrectly solved:Remove all cards except aces and kings from a deck, so that only eight cards remain, of which four are aces and four are kings. From this abbreviated deck, deal two cards to a friend. If he looks at his cards and announces that his hand contains an ace, what is the (...) probability that both his cards are aces? If he announces instead that one of his cards is the ace of spades, what is the probability then that both his cards are aces? (shrink)

In recent years attention to the philosophical and literary production of P. A. Florenskii has become commonplace. The thinker's intellectual legacy is very great. In September 1919, Florenskii wrote a prospectus for a collection of his own writings, which would have amounted to nineteen volumes. The collection was not published, for a number of reasons; nonetheless, many of the philosopher's works did come out during his lifetime. Philosophizing at Russian theological academies is a complex and ramified cultural-historical formation that developed within the Orthodox confession and goes back to the earliest stages of Russian religious-philosophical culture. The formal content of this concept consists of the philosophy courses taught at the Russian theological academies, established on the basis of the 1809 Charter of Theological Academies, and of the philosophical works of the professors and lecturers at these academies, mostly the philosophical articles in the theological journals published by the (...) academies. Russian Romanticism, which first acquired recognizable contours in the 1820s, was a substantively significant phenomenon in Russian culture. Russian Romanticism assumed the unique forms of a sociophilosophical and literaryesthetic current that did not take shape within the confines of a purely literary movement. Romanticism was an important element in the culturalhistorical development of mankind; it was a special type of philosophicalhistorical interpretation of the world and a special type of esthetic awareness and literary-artistic conduct.

In the second half of the nineteenth century utilitarianism and naturalism dominated Russian ethical thought. The Russian intelligentsia, nurtured on the works of N. G. Chernyshevskii, P. L. Lavrov, and D. I. Pisarev, regarded utilitarianism as an alternative to all the ideologies that harness man to the service of "ends higher than himself." It was thought that only man, as a concrete, living individual, could be regarded as the end and purpose of activity. Such concepts as individual interests, utility, and (...) calculus became the cornerstones of practical morality, while scientific studies of human nature became the foundation of theoretical ethics. Any mention of "a priori duty" or "categorical imperative" were regarded as manifestations of religious authoritarianism and political conservatism. (shrink)

In order that a degree-of-belief function be coherent it is necessary and sufficient that it satisfy the axioms of probability theory. This theorem relies heavily for its proof on the two-valued sentential calculus, which emerges as a limiting case of a continuous scale of truth-values. In this "continuum of certainty" a theorem analogous to that instanced above is proved.
